What kind of mother does this? What kind of mother doesn’t?
What kind of mother would you be?
In August 2025, I walked into my daughter’s school and came face to face with a man who sexually harassed me twenty years earlier. I learned via a simple Google search that he had recently left another Maine school district amid sexual harassment allegations. He was the counselor for grades 4-6 at my fourth grade daughter’s school.
What followed exposed something far bigger than one person abusing another. It revealed how easily educators accused of sexual misconduct move between Maine’s school districts, how few safeguards exist for families and school staff, and how difficult it is to change a system even when the risks and the right thing to do are clear.
What Kind of Mother is a series that asks viewers to look at what our institutions continue to look away from. It is a record of refusing to look away, and an invitation to do the same.
This is as close as I can get to naming names. And because I had to be public about this to attempt change, the people who recognize themselves here get to feel a little exposed thanks to their own decisions and role they've played.
